Corporate Wellbeing Prog-rammes Come of Age
How often do we 40 something’s joke for having a “senior moment”?
Today’s reality is - the “real“ mid-life crisis has been discovered in a newly released study claiming that memory, reasoning and comprehension, can start to slip in normal health adults as early as age 45 – a whopping 15 years earlier than doctors believed!
What’s even more alarming is that researchers feel the deterioration of the cognitive function (the brain’s capacity for memory, reasoning and comprehension) is a precursor to dementia conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
The good news is that researchers also show that there is enough evidence already, to show the importance that healthy lifestyles play in warding off the decline; stating that "what is good for the heart is good for the head" in impacting risk of dementia in later life.
The ‘British Medical Journal says that ‘although we don't yet have a sure-fire way to prevent dementia, we do know that simple lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of dementia."
Boosting the heart’s health by eating a healthy diet, not smoking, and keeping blood pressure and cholesterol in check, can not only help protect the heart but can delay onset of memory problems, safeguarding the mind from the ravages of full-blown dementia which currently has no cure.
Now, socially-conscious companies are doing their part to facilitate people’s ability to adopt their own “change” to the way they live. In actively bringing Health and wellbeing into the work place companies are generating a greater awareness of the importance to make healthy lifestyle changes and improve cardiovascular health. Initiatives are being made amongst a wider and younger audience much sooner and in effect these companies are leading the charge to being the solution to tomorrow’s greatest healthcare challenge – understanding the dynamics of cognitive decline and reducing the risk of adverse cognitive outcomes in old age.
